A lithophane is an image carved out of a semi-opaque material. The grayscale is determined by how deep the image is cut. When the lithophane is lit from in front it appears as the image above. When the lithophane is lit from behind the image becomes viable. The shallower cut areas appear darker and the deeper cut areas appear lighter
